Executive Summary

Shine is Global Chief Technology Officer at Dentsu Aegis Network, since October 2017. Shine brings over two decades of technology experience to his position, joining from News Corp where, as Global CIO, he has led a multi-year transformation of their technology capabilities, to enable faster delivery of Digital products to drive revenue growth and a significant modernization of the software platforms used to drive improvements in business effectiveness.  Prior to News Corp, Shine served as the Global IO for the Reed Exhibitions Division at Reed Elsevier (now RELX Group), a global provider of information and analytics for professional and business customers across industries. There, he rebuilt the group's technology capability and led the creation of a new technology strategy which then resulted in a multi-year transformation of process and platforms across the group's businesses in 39 countries worldwide. Shine began his career in July 1991 at ACT Financial Systems (now Misys) as a Business Analyst. In February 1994, he joined Global Asset Management (GAM) and held various positions in Global Wealth Management Business Systems and Digital before rising to Head of Technology. In August 1999, he began a year-long run as Vice President of Global Technology at JPMorgan Chase & Co. From September 2000 to October 2002 he was Program Director at EGG Plc., followed by stints as Global Head of Information Technology Platforms and Development at global asset manager Henderson Global Investors and CIO at insurer the Beazley Group.

  • When asked how he uses social networks to engage in conversations across the industry about the opportunities and challenges technology is creating, Shine said, “I use Twitter, LinkedIn, Slack and some closed networks as a daily source of inspiration and ideas and I share opinions, engage in debates particularly on Enterprise and emerging tech trends.” Commenting on how he developed his management, leadership and personal skills, perhaps through mentoring, training or external activities, he said, “I actively seek out feedback from people I work for, with and those who work for me, so I can understand where I am succeeding and where I need to put more effort in. I mentor team members formally and informally. I am always looking to take on new challenges or projects, particularly those that will take me out of my comfort zone and stretch me.”
  • Asked how he engages his team, he says, "My business is distributed globally so regular communication is key. I do this in a number of ways: Physical town halls in major geographic centres at least twice a year, Attending business and functional management meetings regularly, virtual townhalls using Google Hangouts monthly, video blog periodically, monthly reporting for business teams showing clear information on transformation programmes, goals, dates, outcomes. I also encourage my regional leads to do regular updates within their region."

  • New Role:  In July 2017, Dentsu Aegis Network announced the appointment of Shine as Global Chief Technology Officer. This is a new role for the network and demonstrates the ongoing momentum to create an unparalleled management team to support the company ambition to become a 100 percent digital economy business by 2020.  Shine joins the business on October 1, 2017. “Developing market-leading systems and platforms is critical to gain competitive advantage in the digital economy and, with the appointment of Dominic Shine, the creation of the new Global Chief Technology Officer role marks a further step towards this ambition. Dominic will work in partnership with the strategy, innovation and data teams to identify and leverage the latest, most relevant technologies and innovations, including VR, AR, AI and Voice, offering clients data-driven, game-changing solutions to propel their businesses’ success,” said CEO Jerry Buhlmann.  “Dominic is a highly driven, proven, delivery-focused leader, and I am confident his addition to the top leadership team will further bolster our digital ambitions.”
  • Primary Responsibilities:  In his role as CTO at Dentsu Aegis Network, Shine will oversee both technology strategy and day-to-day technology management, in addition to taking on a significantly broader remit across the technology, innovation and data agendas. This will incorporate client-focused tech solutions, key accountability for all technology platforms, a continued prioritization of cybersecurity, and driving the continued integration of Dentsu Aegis’ data assets and capabilities.
  • Anheuser-Busch InBev Partnership: AB InBev, the world's biggest brewer, has selected Dentsu Aegis Network's Vizeum as its new media agency.  The appointment came at the conclusion of a global media review launched in March.  AB InBev spent over $700 million on measured media in the United States in 2016, according to Kantar Media.  “We have now completed the review of our media planning and buying capabilities globally to reduce complexity and structure our approach to marketing into a more consistent operating model,” an AB InBev representative said in a statement. “We want to thank MediaCom for their work and partnership over the years, and are pleased they will continue to support our business in other regions globally.”

  • Supporting Transformation Efforts:  Dentsu Aegis is at the forefront of the industry in its shift to people-based marketing, and an unwavering commitment to its digital ambition and vision to ‘innovate the way brands are built’ has resulted in a number of strategic hires and acquisitions that have seen it outperform its peer group for the sixth consecutive year, reported the Company in July 2017. The strategic acquisition of Merkle in August 2016, the largest independent data analytics CRM and performance marketing agency in the US, was game-changing for the Group’s capabilities in high-quality data, analytics and CRM and also saw David Williams’ appointment to the Dentsu Aegis Executive.  The top leadership team was further strengthened with Giulio Malegori’s appointment as CEO of the EMEA region in early 2017, and then the recent appointments of Nick Brien as CEO Americas & US and Nigel Morris as Chief Strategy & Innovation Officer have ensured that the Executive Team is designed with growth, transformation, and strategic innovation at its heart.  Shine’s role as Global Chief Technology Officer will ensure that Dentsu Aegis Network is quickly and effectively leveraging emerging tech capabilities across its global network to ensure competitive advantage and continued market leadership.  
  • Launching Merkle India:  In July 2017, Dentsu Aegis signed a definitive agreement to acquire Sokrati, India’s leading data-driven performance marketing and analytics agency, launching Merkle in the country – the first launch of the global data-driven performance marketing agency in the Asia Pacific region. Post-acquisition, Sokrati will be rebranded as Merkle | Sokrati, further scaling Dentsu Aegis India’s data and performance marketing offering.  Ashish Bhasin, Chairman and CEO of Dentsu Aegis Network South Asia, said: “Sokrati has strong ability in CRM and data to accelerate the launch of Merkle in India and further bolster our data practice, which is becoming increasingly critical in all aspects of our business. It will also give our clients added value as we bring CRM and data into the heart of our digital offering. With Dentsu Aegis Network India already being a leader in performance marketing services, with iProspect and the recent acquisition of SVG, the complementary addition of Sokrati will enable the network to take a clearly dominant position in the rapidly growing Indian digital advertising market. With Sokrati on board, we will now be more than twice the size of any of our competitors in search and performance. Out of 3,500 staff in India, about 1,500 will be digital professionals, and over 35% of our revenue – a market-leading statistic – will come from digital.”  Over the past four years, Sokrati was consecutively ranked Deloitte’s top 50 Technology Companies in India.
