Michael (Mike) Saxton
SVP and Chief Learning Officer, American Academy of Physician Assistants
As Chief Learning Officer for the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) since March 2011, Saxton is charged with overseeing all training and educational programs at the nation's largest organization of physician assistants, with nearly 40,000 members in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and several U.S. territories. Saxton has been active in the continuing medical education and continuing professional development professions for more than 20 years, with a primary focus in the commercial support setting. He has been an advocate for transforming continuing education in the health professions so that it contributes to improved healthcare quality and safety. At AAPA, Saxton is working toward improving the quality of medical education, expanding practice-based learning and improvement opportunities, strengthening financial support, and developing a higher level of team-based interprofessional education. He began his career in health education at The Upjohn Company and later worked for Wyeth Pharmaceuticals and Pfizer in addition to running his own consultancies. Saxton also does a lot of volunteer work for such organizations as the Alliance for Continuing Medical Education and the American Medical Association's National Task Force on CME Provider & Industry Collaboration.
