Biographical Summary

Uys is the former Chief Executive Officer of the Vodacom Group, which is controlled by Vodafone Group Plc and is the largest provider of mobile-phone services in South Africa and Tanzania. Africa is the world's fastest-growing market for mobile telecommunication, but one that is fraught with challenges, from fierce competition that's driving down rates to government regulations and taxes that sometimes seem to spring up from out of nowhere. Uys worked with Vodacom from 1993 to 2012, and was part of the engineering team that set the company up. Vodacom serves nearly 42 million customers and has operations South Africa, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho and Mozambique.
