Former Chairman and CEO, Safeway Inc.
Biographical Summary
"Stubborn," "straightforward" and "commanding," Burd earned the nickname "Mr. Fix It" in the 80s when – as a management consultant working with Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co .– he helped grocery chain CEOs turn their companies around. He was named President of Safeway in 1992 when KKR acquired the Company. Today, escalating health care costs are what keeps Burd awake at night and he's working to build coalitions of business leaders to find a solution. A sportsman and fitness buff, Burd runs, skis, golfs and enjoys "virtually any sport." Burd retired from the Chairman and CEO positions in May 2013, saying he wants to spend more time with one of his signature pursuits at Safeway: health care. "While I still have the high level of energy and enthusiasm I brought to the company 20 years ago," said Burd, "I need more personal time and, given my extensive work in health care, I want to pursue that interest further."
