Biographical Summary

A native of Pakistan and a chemical engineer, Hassan earned degrees from the University of London and Harvard before starting his career in sales. He is a veteran of Sandoz Pharmaceuticals (now Novartis), Wyeth and Pharmacia Corporation. During his tenure at Pharmacia, he led the acquisition of Monsanto, which gave the company two blockbuster drugs Celebrex and Bextra. He's was the Chairman and CEO of Schering Plough from 2003 until 2009, when Schering-Plough and Merck closed a $41.1 billion merger deal, which combined the two companies under the name Merck. Hassan participated in the integration of the two companies until the transaction closed before taking on the Chairman role at Bausch & Lomb in 2010.
