Executive Profiles
Biographical Summary
A geologist whose first job was in the BP oil fields, Hayward's career has taken him from oil rigs in China to the BP executive suites in Venezuela. Described as a "technocrat and a hands-on guy," Hayward capped a 25-year career at BP by becoming CEO in 2007. He's now working to repair the company's tarnished image, a seemingly impossible task in the face of the April 2010 Gulf oil spill debacle, under which his profile has skyrocketed–and not in a good way. He was axed in July 2010 in the wake of the Gulf crisis and a staggering quarterly loss. In 2011 he resurfaced as the founder of Vallares PLC, an investment company focused on the oil business, and which mophed into Genel Energy PLC, of which Hayward has been named CEO.
