A geologist whose first job was in the BP oil fields, Hayward's career has taken him from oil rigs in China to the BP executive suites in Venezuela. Described as a "technocrat and a hands-on guy," Hayward capped a 25-year career at BP by becoming CEO in 2007. He's now working to repair the company's tarnished image, a seemingly impossible task in the face of the April 2010 Gulf oil spill debacle, under which his profile has skyrocketed–and not in a good way.
