Biographical Summary
Mack was born in North Carolina, the youngest of six boys. His parents were Lebanese immigrants who changed the family name from Mouchal to Mack. A gifted athlete, Mack attended Duke University on a football scholarship and began working at a small brokerage house while still an undergraduate. A charismatic leader and brilliant dealmaker, Mack has had a tough time since late 2007 with the fortunes of Morgan Stanley turned sour along with most of the rest of the financial services industry. Mack retired from the CEO position on January 1, 2010 and remained Chairman through 2011. He is reportedly writing a book and advising Republican presidential candidates. Upon relinquishing the Chairman role in 2011 he said, "I just want the freedom the next eight to 10 years to kind of do what I'd like to do and I don't know what that is yet but I'm sure things will happen that will give me an opportunity to take advantage of my many years in the business....I have a lot of respect for Secretary Clinton and if there's anything I could do to help her I would consider that."
